Gift listA calmer way to fund Christmas
Set a realistic holiday budget
Start with money already available after regular bills and savings—not a number based on what you hope to put on credit. List every person and every non-gift cost, then leave a modest buffer. A budget should protect January, not borrow from it.
Where Canadians can overspend
Gifts get the attention, but entertaining, travel, décor and wrapping can quietly swell the total. Retail Council of Canada’s 2025 survey found strong deal-seeking behaviour: 85% planned to wait for sales and 80% to compare prices online. Tracking the “extras” separately helps you know what is actually affordable before checkout.
Build next year’s sinking fund
Once you know this year’s realistic total, divide it by the number of pay periods before next holiday season. Move that amount into a separate savings bucket after each payday. A $1,200 target is $100 a month or about $46 every two weeks over a full year.
Holiday budget FAQ
What should I include in a Christmas budget?
Include gifts, food and hosting, travel, décor, charitable giving, cards, postage, wrapping and supplies. Add a buffer for forgotten or last-minute costs.
How much should I spend on Christmas gifts?
There is no universal right amount. Choose a total that fits after regular bills, emergency savings and debt payments. Survey averages are useful context, not a spending goal.
How does a holiday sinking fund work?
Set a target, divide it by the months or pay periods remaining, and save that amount regularly in a separate account or savings bucket.
Does this planner save my information?
No. The calculations happen in this page during your current visit. Nothing you enter is sent to NorthPeak Estimates or stored for your next visit.
What if I am already over budget?
Start with the largest flexible category, often gifts or travel. Set per-person caps, simplify hosting, use points where appropriate, and avoid adding high-interest debt for seasonal purchases.
