Is Pet Insurance Worth It in Canada?

Only 3.8% of Canadian pets are insured — one of the lowest rates in the world. Here’s the 2026 math on whether you should join them.

The numbers

CoverageDogs / monthCats / month
Accident only$15–$30$10–$20
Accident + illness ($5k limit)$47–$90$25–$52
Accident + illness ($10k+ limit)$70–$130$35–$70
With wellness add-on$85–$165$45–$80

The break-even math

At Ontario’s ~$86/month for a dog, five years of premiums costs about $5,160. A single cruciate-ligament surgery or cancer treatment runs $3,000–$8,000+ — and emergency vet bills are the fastest-growing line item in pet budgets (+18% YoY per Rover 2026). Insurance doesn’t have to “pay for itself” every year; it has to prevent the one bill that wrecks the budget.

What to compare

Reimbursement rate (70–90%): on a $10,000 surgery, 90% vs 80% is a $1,000 difference out of your pocket. Annual limit: $5,000 covers most incidents, but cancer or multi-surgery years can exceed it. Deductible type: per-condition deductibles (Trupanion) vs annual deductibles behave very differently for multi-issue pets. Waiting periods: typically 48 hours for accidents, 14 days for illness, 6 months for cruciate conditions.

Pet insurance FAQ

How much does pet insurance cost in Canada in 2026?

National averages (NAPHIA): about $98/month for dogs and $50/month for cats on accident-and-illness plans. Ontario averages: ~$86/month for dogs ($51–$136 range), ~$43/month for cats ($34–$58).

Is pet insurance worth it?

The math favors it for most owners: one emergency surgery ($3,000–$8,000) exceeds years of premiums, vet costs are up ~18% year over year, and only 3.8% of Canadian pets are insured — meaning most owners pay emergencies out of pocket.

What does pet insurance not cover?

Pre-existing conditions are universally excluded. Most plans also exclude routine wellness (vaccines, checkups) unless you buy a wellness add-on, plus cosmetic procedures and breeding costs.

When should I insure my pet?

As young as possible. Premiums are lowest for young healthy pets, and anything diagnosed before enrollment becomes a pre-existing exclusion.

Which pet insurers operate in Canada?

Major options include Trupanion (incl. budget brand Furkin), Pets Plus Us, Fetch, Petsecure, Desjardins (Petline), and Sonnet. Compare deductibles, reimbursement rates (70–90%) and annual limits before choosing.
